About Yvonne

I am a teacher.  As a teacher I see excellence in each student while highlighting the diverse and individual differences. I teach dance to foster connections, connection to its beauty, connection to the possibilities, connection to inspiration and connections to others.

I teach dance for community, for clarity and for charity.

Yvonne Gutierrez is of Cuban descent with a bachelors degree in Computer Science from Pace University. s a member of National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), The International Association of Blacks in Dance, Inc and a core member of the Black Flamenco Network | FUAAD, a Mental Health First Aider also certified in CPR, First Aid and AED, she continues learning and networking in order to evolve helping to inspire and create experiences for the future generations. Nominated for a 2022 Danee Teacher Award from Dance Teacher Magazine. Featured artist and panelist in the 1st Annual AfroMundo Festival in New Mexico (2022). She was a reader and panelist for the 34th Annual Festival Flamenco Alburquerque, the New Perspectives in Flamenco History and Research Symposium.  Ms. Yvonne started her teaching career at the age nineteen. Her teaching trajectory is expansive and diversified from working at many inspiring organizations like Henry Street Settlement, Ballet Hispanico, Joffrey Ballet, the New School, Concepts Dance Studio, Purelements, Marymount Manhattan College, Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School, Flamenco Latino and Educational Alliance. She is a veteran faculty member at Henry Street Settlement as she started over 20 years ago at the Abrons Arts Center under the direction of Louis Johnson and then returned in 2019. Ms. Gutierrez was responsible for creating and building a flamenco program in the lower east side which included enlightening collaborations with her students and Carlota Santana’s Flamenco Vivo. Later on at Henry Street Ms. Yvonne went on to choreograph flamenco as well as salsa, cha-cha to the music of Tchaikovsky in an original version of the Nutcracker entitled “Nutcracker in the Lower”. It became a lower east side community pleaser that played in the legendary Harry Du Jur Playhouse for 10 years (2002-2011).

Although Ms. Gutierrez’s teaching is based in New York, she has taught workshops in Orlando, Florida - New Orleans, Louisiana - Stamford, Connecticut, and Montreal, Canada. In 2015, she received recognition from the Lower East Side Community for her years of service (HIV/AIDS Awareness, support festivals and several overlooked underrepresented groups throughout the Lower East Side).

Highlights of her numerous performances included multiple companies: Flamenco Latino Dance Company, AllNations International Dance Company, Stringbeans Latin Brazilian Jazz Band (directed by Annette Aguilar) as well as events/operas under the direction of Luis Montero. Ms. Yvonne has a world of experience as a former salsa dancer/instructor of Eddie Torres. Her administrative position provides opportunities to attend workshops, webinars and conferences in Early Childhood Education. This in particular contributes to her work with the youth and gives her insight on high quality early care and education from the New York perspective. Ms. Yvonne as she is respectfully known by so many students and colleagues is always working on enhancing her approach to teaching, focusing on the complete student with specific attention to their individual uniqueness.
